Lee H. Bals

Lee is the head of the firm’s litigation department.  He joined Marcus Clegg in 1997, after an extensive trial practice with a major litigation firm in Portland and after a year managing and coordinating litigation on the West Coast for UNUM Life Insurance Company of America.  He is the firm’s senior trial lawyer with twenty-five years of courtroom experience encompassing a broad range of cases.  Much of Lee’s current practice is focused on business litigation, including shareholder disputes, corporate and partnership dissolution and complex commercial contract lawsuits.  He has also handled a number of complicated plaintiff legal malpractice cases and continues to be involved in diverse and varied types of litigation.

Lee has always been a proponent of resolving the most difficult cases in a courtroom, but also recognizes that from a pragmatic and economic standpoint, alternatives to trial – ranging from informal negotiation to mediation to arbitration – must be explored in order to afford Marcus Clegg’s clients the best legal representation possible.  Ultimately it comes down to presenting the client with realistic options to achieve maximum results.

Lee is a member of the Maine State Bar Association and California State Bar Association (Inactive).
